PERSONALITY OUTLINE

Luke could be described as, by far, an unpleasant individual. That's to say the least. At face value, he's a selfish, bratty, inconsiderate, and rude person.

That's just glazing over the surface of it, however...

Seeing as he was never allowed to leave his manor, even for a second, Luke was raised in a very sheltered way. Due to the fact that he was left learning the most basic of things, he was never granted the luxury of knowing things that most people his age should have long been aware of. Fonons, something even children know about in his world, is an example. In short, he was busy learning things like "his parents' faces" (as he puts it to Tear). Luke, having only been created seven years ago (at the start of his journey) had no time to learn the extra things. This made quite an impact on his social skills, needless to say. Luke's stubborn nature was showing from the start, in the fact that he was making escape attempts. Hiding inside a bag, climbing the fence, and even going so far as to disguise himself as a White Knight…are just some of the things Luke attempted to do. Every escape attempt ended in vain, of course, due to the strict rules placed by the king to keep Luke locked away.

Ironically, when he was spirited away from home (via isofon-induced hyperresonance with Tear), he whined about wanting to get back home--even after all the complaining about being stuck at home. Of course, nobody would ever want to be taken away from home, unwillingly, right? Luke was certainly no exception to that. Honestly, a lot of his complaining could be considered perfectly natural, seeing as he was nothing more than a confused child. He was someone that had never experienced loss, death, or even tragedy- the being "kidnapped" hadn't happened to him, after all. There were many incidents where his naive and innocent side was shown, too.

As for examples of moments that highlight that fact, one could be when he saw a monster for the first time. He freaked out and was almost paralyzed with fear. He did end up fighting, but he managed to do a lot of yelling at Tear, first, about not knowing how to fight. Another moment would be the first time he actually wound up killing a person. When faced with that moment, he even managed to do it on near-accident- simply sticking his sword out and telling the soldier not to come any closer. After the fact, Luke woke up and one of the first thoughts on his mind was, "I...I killed someone?!" Yet another example of his being unaware of the nature of his own world, was when Jade blew up a wall of Tartarus, as means of helping them escape imprisonment. Luke freaked out at the explosion and wonders, "How can those two watch an explosion go off right in their faces? I swear, they're not human."

His selfish and vain side was shown not long at all after he was spirited from his manor. When Tear volunteered her mother's pendant, in exchange for a carriage ride (not that she specified just how important it was) out of Tataroo Valley, Luke simply proclaimed how glad he was to not have to get his "shoes dirty". There was also the time he went out of his way to prevent his clothes from getting wet, when they had to cross the river to the Liger's lair. Of course, in all honesty, that moment could be an example of his ability to be rather innovative. He took the fact that Mieu had the ability to shoot balls of fire into mind, glanced at the roots holding a dead tree in place, and put two-and-two together. Burning those roots proved to be an effective way to create a bridge- something he was rather proud of himself for doing, in spite of the fact that Tear pointed out that Mieu was the one they should be appreciative towards.

That was not the only moment where his ability to be inventive/creative was brought up. During one scene, where they're sneaking through Theor Forest, the conversation of Hide-and-go-Seek came up. His best friend, Guy mentioned that Luke had been really good at that game, and had been smart enough to come up with the idea of hiding again just as he was about to be found.

As stated above, however, the 'awful' side of Luke is only touching the surface of his personality, even in the beginning. There were several moments when his kind side was shown, even during his long-haired period. Most moments were directed at Ion- someone who was always genuinely kind to him, in return. When Ion collapsed in the Cheagle Woods, Luke was quick to ask him if he was okay, showing he was genuinely worried for his well-being. The Fon Master also managed to make him blush back-to-back, in a single conversation. Luke took it upon himself to protect the younger teen. He got angry at Ion for pushing himself too hard, telling him not to use anymore of the Arte that weakened him. Then, when Jade was scolding Ion for his running off to investigate the thefts in Engeve, Luke yelled at him to "lay off". Of course, there was one moment where he claimed to be protecting Ion: when the Liger Queen let out a loud roar that caused some large rocks to collapse from the ceiling, Luke used his sword to ensure one of them didn't land on Mieu.

After being thanked, he yelled at Mieu to not get him wrong...and that he was protecting Ion, not him. So, even though he did kind acts, he didn't take well to being thanked or complimented for them. Because that, in turn, was pointing out how "nice" he really was. In all reality, that is no surprise. It wasn't as though he'd ever been complimented, before. Kind words, while he obtained them from his mother and from some of the nicer staff, weren't something he got to hear a lot of. There was even a point where he outright says he'd never been told he was wanted or needed, before (granted, the time he WAS told that was all a...lie).

Put simply, Ion might have had the right idea when he mentioned that Luke had always been a kind person- that he just never truly knew how to express it. So, really it wasn't that he wasn't a good person, in the beginning. It was that he'd never known how to properly let that part of him out, considering he rarely ever got to see how other people expressed that sort of thing. Because, while his mother was a wonderful lady, her form of kindness typically came in the form of spoiling her son. Still, Luke did try on a few occasions to demonstrate his kind side. One example of him giving an effort to show kindness, surprisingly...involved Jade, early on. In spite of his remaining constantly annoyed at the older man, he took the time to outright ask Jade how he was feeling (regarding the Fon Slot Seal placed on him by Largo).

Luke showed moments of maturity even in the beginning. For instance, Luke expressed that he was thinking seriously about the situation in the mining town by saying, "But what should I do...? If I don't go to Akzeriuth, those people will be in trouble."

His inability to kill human beings could be considered kindness; it could also be said that it showed his naivety in a "kill or be killed" kind of world. Regardless, he outright asked Jade how he could kill someone 'unconscious and defenseless'. Not only that, but- the first time Luke saw someone get stabbed, he went into a brief state of shock; when he had to actually fight someone, he flipped out, nearly winding up dead. At one point, he exclaimed "but they're people!". In fact, his inability to kill stretched so far that Tear wound up having to jump in front of Luke to prevent him getting stabbed. Afterward, the group attempted to put Luke in the center of a triangle formation, with Ion, to protect him. It was after those incidents, that Luke finally gained the motivation--the will--to fight for his own life.

Without hesitation, he exclaimed, "I'm not gonna hide in the corner." Afterward, he admitted that he was scared, but that he was willing to push past that. It was in that point Luke was doing what he could to become less of a burden. He'd spent his entire life in a manor where people catered to him. He'd never been needed, wanted, or anything more than...useless. At least that was likely how he was seeing it, at that point. He'd managed to cause Tear to get hurt, just before that, so...the reality of the fight-or-be-killed world had begun to sink in. It was also after that point that he started to see Tear in a slightly different light- even if he didn't fully realize it, yet.

While on the Katsbert Ferry, he and Tear have an interesting discussion. She scolded him for not knowing something, implying that he didn't take enough time to study during the past seven years. He pointed out, "I had a lot of other things I had to learn. Like my parents' faces..." It was after that, she launched into an explanation of the Seventh Fonon. Soon after, they had a moment of awkward:

Tear quietly said, "...I'm sorry."

Naturally, Luke was confused, asking, "Huh? What's with you all of a sudden?"

With an awkward sound in her voice, Tear replied with, "I don't think I've been taking your memory loss very seriously. I've been unkind to you this whole time. I'm ashamed of myself."

Luke was even more confused, though he was quick to try reassuring her with, "I-it's ok, it's not really a..."

Of course, he was cut off with Tear saying, "I'm really sorry." and running off. That scene, alone, was enough to demonstrate that Luke was not good with social interaction. Not having experience in dealing with people outside of the staff of his manor, he wasn't exactly adept in consoling people. There was a likelihood he'd never been put in a situation where he needed to comfort another person? How proper would it be for, say…a maid to come crying to the son of the duke she was working for, after all...? Regardless, however, Luke did attempt to comfort Tear (someone he had spent most of the time annoyed at), showing another shred of kindness that he did hold inside of him.

As the story progresses, Luke starts to soften; Van returns to the picture, however, before much progress can be made. Van jumps into brainwashing mode and tells him he's been "held hostage to later be used as a weapon"...that Luke can "become a hero" by following Van's lead. Luke eats it right up, naturally. He admires Van, with everything in him; anything Van says...goes. In that moment, Luke reveals another piece of the puzzle, regarding the reasons to his being so...emotionally underdeveloped. After Van tells him that he needs him, Luke quickly responds with that's the first time anybody's ever told him that they need him.
